This is me, living the dream on the Chinese tropical island of Hainan

As a college student I was bored and drifted through school.  I had many interests, but really had no clue what to do for a career.  I did rather well in school, but I actually learned and gained very little.  Most of my classes were not very stimulating, so I just studied enough to get good grades.

Then, after being pushed by a friend, I signed up to do a 3-week winter break course in London on Asian religions.  The course and the teacher blew me away!  Not only was the history, culture and customs of Asia completely different from everything I had known before, but my instructor was bubbling over with excitement and enthusiasm.  I became inspired and pursued graduate work in Asian studies.

As I was nearing graduation of my Master’s program in Asian studies, I still didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life.  Then, one day as I was checking my email I saw an advertisement that said, “Teach English in China.”  I had never even imagined such a position existed.

I started to do some research and discovered that there was tons of demand for teachers and I already met the two requirements: native or fluent English and a Bachelor’s degree.  I couldn’t believe it when I read the details of these positions.  14 hours per week!  Free apartment with no rent or utilities!  Travel Allowance! Airfare reimbursement!  4 months of paid vacation per year!  

I was stunned.

It wasn’t long before I found myself in China, full of free time, absolutely loving my life.  My life was full of adventure, excitement, freedom and travel.

I first arrived in China as an English teacher in 2005.  Since then I have taught full-time and part-time at every type of school in China imaginable (public university, private university, private training schools, business English training programs, children summer programs, public high schools, private high schools, kindergartens, test prep centers…) There’s a ton!

And, I soon discovered, not all of these positions give you the dream job lifestyle.

And, after making many, many mistakes and learning many lessons, I have become very good at finding and getting the dream job lifestyle in China.

And I have helped quite a few friends find these positions as well.  And we live it up!

There is one type of position, which is plentiful, that gives you enormous amounts of free time and the ability to truly experience life in China, while allowing you to teach and help motivated and fun students achieve their goals.
